You’ve Been Reading Psalm 23… But Have You Been Missing This?

“The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul…” — Psalm 23:1–3

Psalm 23 is one of the most loved passages in the Bible. We often read it during difficult seasons because it brings comfort and peace. But as I spent time reflecting on these familiar verses, I realized something:

Psalm 23 isn’t just about comfort it’s an invitation to a completely different way of living.

As Christian moms, it’s easy to become consumed with responsibilities. We spend our days caring for everyone else, checking off tasks, and trying to keep life moving. Somewhere along the way, we begin believing that peace comes after everything is finished.

But David reminds us that peace doesn’t begin with an empty to-do list.

It begins with a Shepherd.

Relationship Before Responsibility

The very first words of Psalm 23 are:

“The Lord is my Shepherd…”

Before David talks about rest, provision, or restoration, he points us to a relationship.

A shepherd leads.

A shepherd protects.

A shepherd provides.

Sometimes our exhaustion isn’t simply the result of doing too much it’s the result of trying to carry what only God was meant to carry.

The Shepherd never intended for His sheep to lead themselves.

Sometimes God Makes Us Slow Down

One phrase has always captured my heart:

“He makes me lie down in green pastures.”

Sheep don’t naturally stop when they’re anxious or distracted.

They need the shepherd to lead them to a place where they feel safe enough to rest.

I wonder how many of us are the same.

We keep moving.

We keep striving.

We keep saying, “Just one more thing.”

Yet God gently whispers, “Come and rest.”

Maybe slowing down isn’t a setback.

Maybe it’s an invitation.

Only God Can Restore Your Soul

Notice what David says next:

“He restores my soul.”

Not a vacation.

Not a perfectly organized planner.

Not checking every box on today’s list.

Those things can be wonderful gifts, but they cannot restore what only God can heal.

Real restoration happens in His presence.

It’s there that anxious hearts become peaceful.

Weary souls become refreshed.

Heavy burdens become lighter.

A Gentle Invitation This Week

As you read Psalm 23 this week, don’t rush through it.

Pause after each verse.

Ask yourself:

* Where is my Shepherd leading me today?
* What burden have I been carrying that belongs to Him?
* Where is He inviting me to rest?

You may discover that the peace you’ve been searching for has been found in His presence all along.
