When Overwhelm Isn’t a Season It’s a Signal
The Small Stones Series
If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed before the day even begins, this message is for you.
Not the overwhelming moments caused by a crisis.
But the quiet, constant mental load the kind that sits in the background of your life and never fully shuts off.
For many Christian working moms, overwhelm has become so familiar that we stop questioning it. We assume it’s normal. We push through it. We tell ourselves, this is just part of being a mom.
But what if overwhelm isn’t something you’re meant to manage
What if it’s something God is trying to get your attention through?
Overwhelm Is One of the Small Stones
In the Small Stones Series, we’re learning that it’s often not the big disruptions that steal our peace it’s the daily pressures we quietly carry.
Overwhelm is one of those stones.
It shows up as:
-
Constant mental juggling
-
Decision fatigue
-
Feeling responsible for everything
-
Being physically present but mentally exhausted
Over time, this weight wears you down not because you’re weak, but because you were never meant to carry it alone.
What Scripture Reveals About Overwhelm
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7
Scripture doesn’t minimize overwhelm it invites you to release it.
The word all reminds us that nothing is too small, too repetitive, or too “everyday” to bring to God. The mental load, the to-do list, the worries you replay in your mind at night He cares about all of it.
Overwhelm is not a failure of faith.
It’s often a signal that your heart is carrying more than it was designed to hold.
Why Overwhelm Feels Especially Heavy for Moms
One of the reasons overwhelm feels so intense for moms is because it convinces us that everything depends on us.
When everything feels urgent:
-
Peace feels impossible
-
Rest feels undeserved
-
God’s presence feels distant
Not because God has moved but because your mind is crowded.
And a crowded mind makes it hard to hear God clearly.
God’s Invitation Is Not More Effort It’s Relief
Jesus speaks directly to the overwhelmed heart:
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28
Rest is not just physical.
It’s emotional.
It’s mental.
It’s spiritual.
God doesn’t ask you to figure everything out before coming to Him. He simply asks you to come.
A Gentle Reset for This Week
Instead of trying to fix everything, start here:
Ask yourself:
-
What am I mentally carrying that God never asked me to manage?
-
What pressure am I holding onto instead of surrendering?
Then pray:
“God, I give You the mental weight I’ve been carrying.
Help me release what is not mine and trust You with what is.”
This is how the small stones begin to fall away through daily surrender, not drastic change.
