I’m Tired of Being the Strong One: When Everyone Depends on You
There is a kind of tired that sleep doesn’t always fix.
It comes from being the woman everyone depends on.
You’re the one who remembers what needs to be done. The one people call when there’s a problem. The one who keeps showing up for your family, your work, your ministry, and everyone else who needs you.
And somewhere along the way, you became known as the strong one.
But what happens when the strong woman gets tired?
Maybe you’ve whispered these words to yourself lately:
“I’m tired of being the strong one.”
If so, maybe you don’t need someone to tell you to keep pushing. Maybe you need permission to acknowledge that you are tired and that you were never meant to carry everything alone.
Being Capable Doesn’t Mean You Have Unlimited Capacity
Sometimes being the strong one becomes part of our identity.
We tell ourselves:
I can handle it.
I’ll figure it out.
Everybody else has enough going on. I don’t want to bother them.
So we keep carrying.
But just because you can carry something doesn’t mean you should.
Being capable doesn’t mean you have unlimited capacity. And constantly pushing past your limits can eventually leave you physically, emotionally, and spiritually depleted.
Sometimes the overwhelmed woman doesn’t need another productivity strategy.
She needs to put something down.
You Don’t Have to Be Everyone’s Source
Second Corinthians 12:9 reminds us:
“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”
We often think strength means never letting anyone see us struggle. But God doesn’t ask us to pretend that we’re okay when we’re running on empty.
Your weakness doesn’t disqualify you from being a strong woman.
It reminds you where your strength comes from.
God never asked you to be everyone’s source. You have a Source.
When we forget this, we can begin living as though everything depends on us the family, the job, the household, the ministry, and everyone else’s needs.
That’s a heavy way to live.
There is freedom in going before God and asking:
“Lord, what is mine to carry in this season and what do I need to release?”
Strong Women Need to Receive Too
You may be very good at giving.
But are you comfortable receiving?
Receiving help.
Receiving support.
Receiving rest.
Receiving care.
Receiving without feeling like you have to immediately give something back.
Even Jesus withdrew from the crowds and spent time with the Father. There were always people who needed Him, yet He did not allow every need surrounding Him to dictate every moment.
There will always be another task to complete and another person who needs something.
If you’re waiting until nobody needs you before you make room to be replenished, you may never make that room.
Caring for yourself isn’t about abandoning the people you love. It’s about recognizing that you are a person God cares for too.
Where Are You Performing Strength?
Here’s a question I want you to sit with this week:
Where am I performing strength when I actually need support?
Maybe you’ve been saying, “I’m fine,” when you’re exhausted.
Maybe you need to ask for help at home.
Maybe you need to say no to another commitment.
Maybe you need to stop solving a problem that belongs to someone else.
Or perhaps your first step is simply being honest with God:
“Lord, I’m tired.”
You don’t have to make the prayer sound pretty.
You can come to Him exactly as you are.
You Can Put Something Down
To the woman who is tired of being the strong one, remember this:
You don’t have to prove how strong you are by how much you can carry.
You are allowed to need help.
You are allowed to receive.
You are allowed to create space to rest and be replenished.
And you can trust God with the things you cannot hold together.
Sometimes strength isn’t picking up one more thing. Sometimes strength is finally knowing what it’s time to put down.
Your Flourishing Step: Take a few quiet moments today and ask God, “What am I carrying that I need to release, receive help with, or surrender to You?”
You don’t have to keep running on empty.
There is another way to live one rooted in harmony, not hustle where you can care for the people and responsibilities God has entrusted to you without continually losing yourself in the process.
You deserve to be poured into, too.
With love,
Felicia
