When Your Heart Is Overwhelmed: Let God Lead You to the Rock

“From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” — Psalm 61:2

Have you ever been the woman who looked like she was handling everything, but inside, you were overwhelmed?

I have.

There was a season of my life when I was working, raising my sons, taking care of my family, serving, and trying to keep everything moving.

From the outside, I probably looked like I was doing just fine.

I was showing up.

Getting things done.

Taking care of what needed to be taken care of.

Being there for the people who needed me.

But inside?

I was tired.

And eventually, I realized something that changed the way I looked at overwhelm:

It wasn’t just everything I was doing that was exhausting me. It was everything I was carrying while I was doing it.

Sometimes It’s Not Your Schedule—It’s What You’re Carrying

For a long time, I thought I simply needed to manage my time better.

Maybe I needed to organize more.

Plan better.

Work harder.

Find a way to fit everything in.

But the deeper issue wasn’t always my calendar.

I was carrying responsibility.

I was carrying expectations.

I was carrying the pressure of trying to make sure everybody was okay.

And somewhere along the way, I had become accustomed to carrying so much that I didn’t recognize how heavy it had become.

Maybe you know that feeling.

You’re getting things done, but you’re exhausted.

You’re taking care of everybody, but you’re depleted.

You’re saying, “I’m fine,” while something inside of you is saying:

This is too much.

That’s why Psalm 61:2 speaks so deeply to me.

David says:

“When my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”

Notice that David didn’t say if his heart became overwhelmed.

He said when.

Overwhelm wasn’t something he pretended didn’t exist.

He acknowledged it.

And then he showed us what to do with it.

You Don’t Have to Be the Rock for Everybody

One of the hardest things I had to learn was that I couldn’t keep trying to be strong for everybody without acknowledging when I needed strength too.

As women, we can become the ones everybody depends on.

We’re the ones who remember.

The ones who make things happen.

The ones people call.

The ones who figure things out.

The ones who keep everything moving.

And if we’re not careful, we can start believing that everything depends on us.

But Psalm 61:2 reminded me of something I desperately needed to remember:

I am not the Rock.

God is.

And maybe you need that reminder today too.

You don’t have to be the rock for everybody. You have a Rock.

There are things God never intended for your shoulders to carry alone.

There are situations you cannot control.

People you cannot fix.

Outcomes you cannot guarantee.

And expectations you may need to release.

You can bring all of it to Him.

“Lead Me”

There are two little words in Psalm 61:2 that have become incredibly important to me:

Lead me.

David didn’t say, “God, help me figure everything out.”

He said:

Lead me.

That’s a completely different posture.

When I was overwhelmed, my natural response was to start trying to figure things out.

How am I going to get all of this done?

How am I going to handle this?

Where am I going to find the time?

How can I make everything work?

But I’ve learned to ask a different question:

“God, what are You asking me to do right now?”

Not everything that needs to happen this month.

Not everything everybody else expects from me.

Not everything sitting on my to-do list.

What are You asking of me in this moment and in this season?

Sometimes His leading means move forward.

Sometimes it means wait.

Sometimes it means say no.

Sometimes it means ask for help.

Sometimes it means release something you’ve been holding too tightly.

And sometimes…

it means rest.

Maybe You Don’t Need to Push Harder

That’s why when I talk to an overwhelmed woman today, I don’t immediately want to hand her another schedule.

Because sometimes another planner isn’t the first thing she needs.

Sometimes she needs to stop long enough to recognize what she’s carrying.

Ask yourself:

What am I carrying right now that’s making my heart feel so overwhelmed?

Maybe it’s guilt because you can’t be everything to everybody.

Maybe it’s the pressure to meet everyone’s expectations.

Maybe it’s worry about your children.

Maybe it’s your career.

Maybe it’s ministry.

Maybe it’s your home.

Maybe you’ve said yes too many times because you didn’t want to disappoint anyone.

Or maybe you’ve simply been pouring out for so long that you haven’t stopped long enough to realize:

I’m running on empty.

Whatever it is, you don’t have to get yourself together before coming to God.

Come overwhelmed.

The Rock Gives You a Different Perspective

Think about what happens when you climb to a higher place.

You can see differently.

The things below haven’t necessarily disappeared, but your perspective has changed.

That’s what happens when we allow God to lead us back into His presence.

The circumstances may not immediately change.

The responsibilities may still be there.

But God begins changing the way we see them.

When everything feels urgent, He can show us what actually matters.

When we think we have to do everything, He can show us what to release.

When guilt tells us we can’t slow down, He reminds us that rest isn’t something we have to earn.

And when we feel as though everything depends on us, He reminds us:

It doesn’t.

God is higher than the thing overwhelming you.

Higher than the pressure.

Higher than the uncertainty.

Higher than the responsibility.

Higher than the situation you don’t know how to fix.

He is the Rock.

Your Overwhelm Reset

If your heart feels overwhelmed today, don’t begin by trying to fix your entire life.

Start here.

1. Acknowledge It

Tell God the truth:

“Lord, my heart is overwhelmed.”

You don’t have to hide your exhaustion from Him.

2. Ask What You’re Carrying

Take a moment and ask:

“What am I carrying that’s making my heart feel so overwhelmed?”

Write down whatever comes to mind.

Then ask an even deeper question:

“Lord, did You actually ask me to carry this?”

3. Release It

You may not be able to change every circumstance today, but you can surrender the weight of it to God.

“Lord, I’m giving this back to You.”

4. Let Him Lead You

Instead of asking how you’re going to fix everything, pray:

“Lord, show me my next faithful step.”

Maybe it’s a conversation.

A boundary.

A no.

A yes.

A request for help.

Or simply permission to rest.

You don’t need all the answers today.

You need His direction for the next step.

You Can Come to Him Overwhelmed

If I could sit across the table from the overwhelmed woman reading this today, I’d tell you:

You don’t have to carry everything today.

You don’t have to solve everything today.

And you certainly don’t have to be everybody’s rock.

You have a Rock.

I’ve learned that harmony doesn’t mean my life will never become busy or that I’ll never experience another overwhelming season.

Harmony means I’ve learned where to return when I do.

I return to God.

I return to His presence.

I return to His Word.

I return to His direction.

And I allow Him to lead me again.

So today, let Psalm 61:2 become your prayer:

“Lord, when my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I.”

One release.

One decision.

One faithful step at a time.
