Praying Through Tears: Seeking God in the Hardest Motherhood Moments
Motherhood is one of the most beautiful callings, but it can also be one of the most emotionally exhausting. As a Christian career mom, you juggle the responsibilities and cares of work, family, faith, and personal well-being. Some days, the weight of it all just just down right bring you to tears—tears of exhaustion, frustration, disappointment, or even guilt. In those moments, it’s easy to feel alone, but the truth is, God is with you in every tear you cry.
If you've ever found yourself breaking down in prayer, struggling to put your feelings into words, know that you are not alone. God invites us to come to Him, even in our most broken moments. Here’s how you can seek Him when the tears won’t stop.
1. Remember That God Sees Every Tear
"You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book." – Psalm 56:8 (NLT)
As moms, we often feel unseen and unappreciated. Whether it's the late-night feedings, the rushed mornings, or the countless sacrifices we make, it can feel like no one truly understands the weight we carry. But God does. Every tear you shed is precious to Him. He sees your struggle, your exhaustion, and your heart’s desire to be the best mom you can be.
In your hardest moments, remind yourself that your tears are not wasted. They are seen, counted, and held by a loving Father who cares deeply for you. Ask Hagar!! He is the El- Roi the God who sees.
Genesis 16:13 (KJV) - "And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?"
2. Let Your Tears Be a Prayer
"In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans." – Romans 8:26 (NIV)
There are days when words fail us—when the burden feels too heavy and we don’t even know how to pray. But the beauty of God’s grace is that He understands our heart even when we can’t form the words.
Instead of feeling guilty for not having the “perfect” prayer, simply come before Him as you are. Sit in His presence. Cry if you need to. Let the Holy Spirit intercede for you. Sometimes, our deepest prayers are the ones we never speak out loud. Reminds me of Hannah’s heartfelt prayer.
3. Seek Strength in God’s Word
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." – Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
When emotions are overwhelming, turning to Scripture can be a lifeline. God's Word is filled with promises of strength, peace, and comfort. When you’re struggling, open your Bible and allow His truth to calm your heart.
Here are a few scriptures to hold onto when motherhood feels overwhelming:
- Isaiah 40:31 – "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength."
- Psalm 34:18 – "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
- Philippians 4:6-7 – "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
Write these verses down, place them where you can see them, and remind yourself daily that God is your source of strength.
4. Embrace God’s Grace Over Your Life
"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." – 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)
As moms, we often put pressure on ourselves to do it all—to be the perfect employee, the perfect wife, the perfect mother. But God never called us to perfection; He called us to depend on Him and trust Him.
When the tears come, let them be a reminder that you don’t have to carry it all on your own. God’s grace is enough. He fills in the gaps where you fall short. He strengthens you when you feel weak.
